The total number of visitors has seen an increase over the same period last year. A bumper July added to the recovery of the Canary Islands’ tourism sector boosting the total number of visitors for this year past 5.8 million.
The figures for the year to July show an increase of more than 20 per cent over the same period last year and place the Canary Islands second on the list of the most popular destinations in Spain.
The good news comes amid figures showing an upturn in tourist numbers for the whole of Spain, with 7.5 million tourists recorded in July alone, an increase of 7.2 per cent over the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the British market continues its revival with 7.5 million visitors visiting Spain so far this year, an increase of more than nine per cent compared to the same period last year.

Good news for Tenerife as the number of cruise passengers docking in the Canary Islands soared to more than 819,300 in the year to June, an increase of 30 per cent on the same period last year.
While the Mediterranean took the lion’s share (68 per cent), of the Spanish cruise market, the latest figures from the Spanish Ports Authority place the Canary Islands second only to Barcelona in terms of passenger numbers.
Meanwhile, the number of cruise ships visiting Spain is declining, which would appear to be at odds with the increase in passenger numbers.
However, experts say this is down to the introduction of a new breed of ‘super’ cruise ships, such as the Disney Magic and Queen Mary 2, capable of carrying far more passengers.
